In cooking, in hand soaps, in bathroom sprays… basil has a grassy scent that immediately brings about feelings of freshness. I was excited to find a fresh basil emulsion in the Wilton Treatology Flavor Kit. While I don’t usually find myself using artificial anything when I cook (aside from my beloved vanilla, almond, and lemon extracts when baking), the idea of using “natural” flavorings intrigues me. Personally, I’m not a fan of the vanilla custard or graham cracker flavors that come in the kit (the real thing tastes much much better imo) but since homemade play-dough has become one of our favorite crafts it’s great to use something edible and non-toxic for unique and timely scents. I will sing praises for the Champagne flavor, but using real bubbly in baking is again this much better. I was thinking about what smells might associate well with St. Patrick’s Day and wasn’t thinking whiskey and hops would be very kid-appropriate. Once I saw the little green basil leaves on the label of the bottle, basil felt perfect. The emerald colors, gold glitter, and basil emulsion makes for the perfect tactile activity to welcome the colors of spring. Ingredients 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup salt 2 tablespoons cream of tartar 1 cup water 1 tablespoon vegetable oil food coloring basil bakery emulsion green and gold disco dust or non-toxic craft glitter Instructions Combine flour, salt, cream of tartar in a medium-sized, non-stick saucepan. Add in water, vegetable oil, food coloring, and a good amount of basil flavoring (enough so you can smell it). Stir well. Heat over medium to medium-high heat, constantly stirring. The dough will start to thicken quickly. Heat and stir until the dough becomes a ball. Remove from heat and turn out dough onto your clean, flat surface. A dusting of flour will keep the dough from sticking if needed. The dough will be warm but cools quickly. Knead the dough as it cools, mixing in the disco dust or glitter.
