Sushi in Maryland can be fleeting. If you know the right spots to look though, you can find really excellent sushi.

In Howard County, the reigning king of Sushi is and always has been Sushi Sono. Nestled in a tiny corner of the Columbia Lakefront, Sushi Sono has been the most popular sushi restaurant in Howard County for over a decade.

Sushi Sono is typically very busy so I advise making a reservation ahead of time if you plan on going on a Friday or Saturday night.

The menu at Sushi Sono is fairly standard, but they do offer some delicious specials, such as soft shell crabs (during season). When eating sushi, if you’re eating with more than one other person I always advise on getting a boat. You get way more food this way and the cost, I think, works out better in your favor. So we started with a sushi boat, the Sono # 12 roll, and a simple rainbow roll.

The sashimi at Sono is smooth and buttery, with eat delicious bite you can tell that the fish is fresh and prepared well. The sushi rolls are a pleasant change of pace from many other sushi restaurants that over do it on the mayo sauce. That makes the sushi experience ultra rich and unappetizing after a while, instead Sushi Sono delivers a fresh roll with good ingredients without the loud mayo explosion.

Overall Sushi Sono is a great sushi restaurant, the menu is standard sushi fare it’s not earth shattering, but honestly I don’t want earth shattering when I want good sushi. I just want good sushi, which is what Sushi Sono is.

Out of all the sushi restaurants in Howard County, I would still have to venture to say that Sushi Sono still remains the best.

Final Grade: A
